Nowadays, schools are walking out and protesting all sorts of political issues, and one of them is I.C.E. People at TMMS have been talking about walking out like Capital High School, Jefferson Middle School, River Ridge High School, and many more. But the question is, what do students think we should do, protest or not?
Adela Mathenson, an 8th grader, replied to the question saying,” Yeah, I think it would definitely make a statement. And I think that it would definitely showcase that just because we’re school kids, just because we’re simply students does not mean that we don’t have a voice and doesn’t mean that we don’t have the ability to make a difference. I mean, going back to walkouts when it came to slavery and like the late fifties and sixties and everything they did made a difference. It was very clear that like these kids they know what they want and they’re not going to stop or rest until they get it. I think with the whole I.C.E situation and the state of our country right now, I think definitely it would be necessary and especially helpful for the people that you actually care about by using your voice. You have a voice, you might as well use it.”
Sawyer Bushell, an 8th grader, being the good kid in this situation said: “I think that they should totally do it. However, I’m not gonna be one of them that does it because I know that I’d get in trouble with my parents for skipping school. And I don’t want to get in trouble with my parents right now, but I would support people doing it. And but I would not do it myself.” And when I asked her is there was a permission slip and you had to fill it out like a field trip, and she said: ”If there was a permission slip that I would totally like introduce it to my parents. But if my parents say no, then I totally respect what they say. Me personally, I’m not for I.C.E and I don’t like them. They’re what they’re doing to our state isn’t good. And so I would probably do it, I’d be open to the idea of doing it. It’s just kind of up to my parents at this point.”
Next up we have the loud, the crazy, the disobedient Henry Epplin, who responded quite unusual saying, “If you to ask me, I mean, I would love a walkout but not for the reasons of protesting against I.C.E. I would probably just go to the mall, you know?”
Finally, we have Maddy Kahler a 8th grader, and she said,”Yes we should walk out because I.C.E is a terrible thing and kids should have a chance to protest too during school.”
Based on all of the interviewees, and these aren’t all the students, it was clear we should walk out and protest these major government issues, but have strict ground rules for all of the Henry’s on the trip so they don’t sneak to the mall. In today’s society it’s important to stand up for your unalienable rights as a country and not let others in power break these important rights every human should have no matter who they are.
