At the end of the year there is a lot to do. You might be the one that is trying to catch up with all the missing assignments so your parents won’t lecture you all summer vacation, or the one that is just trying to keep their grades consistent. At Thurgood Marshall Middle School, otherwise known as TMMS, the 7th and 8th graders are busy with their Human Rights Project, AKA HRP. HRP is a two month long project at the end of the year and is the most stressful for the 7th and 8th graders. Many people have different opinions on how the end of the school year has been going for them personally, some of which will be mentioned in this article.
Vivian Skogen, a 7th grader, states “I’m looking forward to it, but I also don’t want it to be the end of school year because Miss Merkley and Mr. Cunningham are retiring, and then Mr. Wes is going to capital.”
“Hi, I’m Maddie. My thoughts about the end of the year are why the teachers are making everything so much bigger. All the projects are bigger, assignments are bigger, we also have shorter time to do all of our work. The school year is going okay for me and my HRP project is going good.” Clearly Maddy thinks that the end of the school year is getting harder and harder and that the projects are getting bigger.
Adela Mathenson, an 8th grader, states:”I definitely say, I think overall it’s been going really well, but for seventh and eighth graders, we obviously have the Human Rights project, which is the biggest project like of the whole year. And that has been definitely stressful just because if you miss school, you’re essentially missing a really critical work day for yourself. And it’s just battling not only social studies and ELA, but also balancing it with all your other homework from your other classes. And the fact that they do this project at the end of the year is really hard because then you basically don’t have a ton of time to fix anything if you need to make any grades up. So that part is definitely really stressful. But overall, I think it’s been pretty good. I’ve managed to maintain decent grades from the whole year, but definitely it’s taken a toll on, I think a lot of people just because of the end of year stress of ending strong with good grades.”
Emma Epperson, a 8th grader, says, “I’m excited forgetting off of school and being able to sleep in in the summer. And I’m feeling confident about my grades because I feel like right now I have all A’s and I only have like a few assignments that I still need to do.”
Depending on the person and what they struggle with, the end of the school year can have different results and can mean different things. From the few interviewee’s responses, you can already tell that a lot of people have opinions that are not always identical.
