The world is in a state that many would consider nothing short of an abomination. As the TMMS community we strive to be a place where everyone belongs, everyone learns, and everyone grows. Unfortunately, our world is not mirroring the kind of community that we strive for, yet all of this is a major understatement to what’s really going on. With everything, from the ICE raids and abuse of “Illegal Immigrants,” to the fact that Trump has renamed The Gulf of Mexico, The Gulf of America, to every little thing in between. I’m sure everybody in the country, and potentially the world, has their own opinion on the whole situation, but these are some of the opinions of people you may know.
Brandon, A seventh grader here at Thurgood Marshall starts off the topic with “Things just feel poorly managed. Most people can’t keep their promises that they intend to keep.” When asked what we could do as a group of middle schoolers in the town of Olympia he said that “ We can protest ICE.”
Another quote from Bless Zaldivar “From what I know, There are many things I’d like to say about our current state of well being that I am not allowed to say in school, but to put this in the most kid friendly way possible I am disappointed, disgusted, and many other things. It’s just so jaw breaking that all these people have all this power, but they refuse to work on anything but their own benefit.” When she was asked what we could do as a community of mere middle schoolers, her response was clear and firm “I believe the whole idea of us being just middle schoolers, is the wrong kind of mindset in a situation like this, because we have seen in history that students have been part of huge protests, the walkouts when Martin Luther King was trying to get our rights to be equal. Now, our rights are once again being threatened, and we cannot sit idly by with the defense of us being young. Because while we are young, we have the education, and we have the privilege to work against our tyrannical government.”
“Well I can’t speak to the rest of the world, but as far as the United States is, I am deeply saddened and disturbed at the politics of our nation, and the lack of humanity that those politics have been displaying.” When asked about what we can do, and what our best plan of action is for us middle schoolers, her response was, “I think your best form of action is to pay attention in your classes, your teachers are giving you comprehensive material that helps you understand where our nation came from, and where it’s going.”
Going back to previous statements, everyone is bound to have an opinion on everything happening in our world right now. The best thing we can do as a community, is educate people on the matter at hand, and stand up against it. The interviewees had many ideas of how we can stand up, and use our voice for something to benefit our nation as a whole. The next step is putting those plans into action.
